This is a brief note on a friend of a friend; George Bronwin, or ‘The Shy Potter’ as he shall henceforth be known. On a rather sunny and delicious Saturday in September I turned up on George’s doorstep in Islington to learn more about him and his ceramic making.
George is just starting out and already has an enviable list of clients. Each piece he creates follows on from a client commission and his craft is a labour of love. He makes anything from candlesticks to serving platters, to toothbrush mugs and started off on his journey by taking a 12 week pottery course.
The most striking of his collection are his hand painted, blue pattered ceramics, with inspiration drawn from the Victoria & Albert Museum, which holds the world’s largest collection of ceramics. They have just enough detail to be interesting but not enough colour to be difficult to decide what should go in them.
He told of how he was trying out different colours and accidentally used too much pink which resulted in a sort of sad looking burnt red mug. He subsequently tweaked the quantities and has a range of stock in that lovely warm, light pink which should have a place in everyone’s kitchen.
Potters, like silversmiths, have their own individual stamps. These are often based on Japanese signs but this is not obligatory. George has a rather lovely little stamp, with a crown and his initials.
